Assalamualaikum w.b.t.

I have the soul of an artist. I am an aspiring graphic designer. Of course I’m attracted to products with prettier packaging and sigh at the terrible design of most restaurant menus. I don’t always voice my opinions out loud, but I’ve had to deal with the consequences of doing so.

I had this friend once. She was holding a reference book. Honestly, it had one of the ugliest covers I’d ever seen, so I stated my opinion out loud with no filter. She got mad and proceeded to tell me that there are people out there who don’t have the opportunity to get an formal education or academic books. I didn’t expect a response like that. Sorry bro, it’s in my DNA code to criticise bad design — it doesn’t mean I wouldn’t use the book when I needed to study.

Another time, she just discovered how to edit photos. When she was done with one picture, she showed it to me with a super-proud look on her face, saying, “Cantik kan?”. It took me everything not to tell her that it looked waaay too retouched, ultimately tacky and looked five times better without the bad filter. I would’ve came up with something like that at the age of eleven. But she looked so pleased with her ‘masterpiece’, how could I condemn her hard work?

Whenever you feel like criticizing any one…just remember that all the people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.” ― F. Scott Fitzgerald

I guess, in this case, my advantages are,

a) being more exposed to technology since I was young, and,

b) having a better eye for design.

So, yeah, you can’t always have #nofilter when dealing with people.
